Leader for Sustainability and Smart Metering: Lorenz is award German Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment
The German Environment Ministry and the German Industry Association BDI have honoured Lorenz with one of the most prestigious corporate awards in Germany.
The Federal Environment Ministry and the Federation of German Industries have awarded Lorenz the German Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment. This award honors the development and intelligent production of smart water meters as well as their take-back and remanufacturing within the scope of a profound circular economy concept. Environment Minister Svenja Schulze applauded the prize winners.
The German Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment (IKU) is one of the highest corporate awards in Germany. Every two years, the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) recognise national role models from industry and research with the prize. In seven categories, the organizers honor innovative technologies, techniques, procedures, processes, products, services and business models that show new ways of protecting the climate and the environment. The prize is endowed with a total of 175,000 euros.
From more than 140 companies and research institutions, the high-ranking jury headed by chairman Prof. Ottmar Edenhofer (Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK) selected Lorenz GmbH & Co.KG as winner in the category "Environmentally friendly products and services". The award is granted for cutting-edge innovation and a far-reaching circular economy concept. The smart water meters of the medium-sized family-owned company enable precise flow measurement, efficient and secure data transmission and intelligent analysis in water networks. This prevents water wastage and significantly simplifies the processes of water suppliers, municipalities and metering services.
As the water meters are made of high-quality materials and their longevity and reusability is ensured throughout the entire development and production process, Lorenz can take them back after use and reuse them in whole or in components to the highest degree within a remanufacturing process. This saves hundreds of tons of raw materials and millions of kilowatt hours of electrical energy every year, as well as the associated environmental effects and CO2 emissions. Thanks to the material cost savings, production in Germany remains competitive with low-cost products from low-wage countries.
As due to the corona virus the award ceremony could not take place in Berlin as planned, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze paid tribute to the prize winners in a video message.
